Holly Grail for ambisonic distribution

Here’s 3 steps to the holy grail for ambisonics distribution. All solutions assume that there is minimal to no setup required by the end listener (or at worst 1 or 2 clicks).

Ambisonia, in the long term, should try to avoid serving too many different file formats. But I think most scenarios should be achievable via a combination of AC3 and Vorbis.

The Newcomer gets blown away

A newcomer lands on Ambisonia.com, clicks on ‘play’. The newcomer happens to have a surround sound card installed, they are listening to ambisonics within 10 seconds of landing on the web page.

appropriate formats: 

  • AAC (square decode) in Quicktime
  • AC3 (square decode)
  • BFormat AAC + embedable custom decoder
  • B-Format Vorbis + embedable custom decoder

The Home Theatre enthusiast wants to stream to the AV receiver

Out of the browser, digitally to the receiver… for better quality D to A conversion.

  • AC3 (square decode)
  • B-Format AAC + custom decoder that can wrap 5.1 into an AC3 or DTS stream on the fly
  • B-Format Vorbis + custom decoder that can wrap 5.1 into an AC3 or DTS stream on the fly

The Audiophile wants height, or other speaker arrays

Out of the browser, streaming to a custom speaker setup.
